Design for a Fountain with Rivergods and Nymphs
1511-74
Giorgio Vasari is famous for writing the first history of art, but he was also a busy architect who loved a good spectacle. This drawing shows his wild concept for a fountain, piled high with mythological figures in a chaotic, energetic stack. At the bottom, muscular river gods and nymphs lounge around pouring water from jars like they're at an ancient pool party, while smaller figures perch on the rocky mound above. It’s a perfect example of Mannerist style—crowded, dynamic, and a bit showy—giving us a peek into the mind of the man who designed the Uffizi Gallery.
