Crémieu, Seen from Chaillonnette
c. 1867-1872
François-Auguste Ravier captures a moody, atmospheric view of the town of Crémieu from the vantage point of Chaillonnette. The thick, swirling brushstrokes in the sky suggest a restless wind, while the dark, heavy foliage in the foreground anchors the scene in deep shadow, contrasting with the pale, glowing horizon. Though often overshadowed by his famous friend Camille Corot, Ravier was a vital precursor to Impressionism, mastering the art of painting outdoors to capture the fleeting, emotional quality of light.
