Christ’s entry into Jerusalem
François de Nomé, also known as Monsù Desiderio, was famous for his eerie, fantastical cityscapes, and this piece is a perfect example. Instead of a sunny, triumphant parade, Christ enters Jerusalem through a dark, cavernous archway that feels more like a dungeon or a ruin than a city gate. The crowd is huddled in the shadows, almost swallowed by the massive, crumbling architecture, while a sliver of bright sky and a lone palm tree peek through the opening, hinting at the world outside. It's a moody, dramatic take on a classic biblical scene, swapping traditional glory for a sense of mystery and impending doom.
