The Storm

The Storm by François Diday, 1838

François Diday really knew how to paint a bad weather day! In this 1838 scene, a massive, brooding sky takes up most of the view, threatening to unleash a downpour while patches of blue sky peek through. Down below, waves crash violently against a wooden breakwater, and tiny sailboats look like they're having a very rough commute across the choppy water. It’s a great example of 19th-century landscape art that focuses on the sheer drama of nature rather than just a pretty view.
