The Sea

The Sea by Gustave Courbet, 1865

Courbet was absolutely obsessed with the raw, untamed power of the ocean, often venturing out in stormy weather just to capture its mood. In this dramatic scene, heavy, bruised clouds loom over a choppy, dark green sea, dwarfing a tiny sailboat on the horizon. The thick, rough brushstrokes practically vibrate with energy, making you feel the salt spray and hear the waves crashing against the rocky foreground—a perfect example of his Realist belief in painting only what is right in front of you.
