Sorrento
François Edouard Bertin captures the dramatic, towering cliffs of Sorrento in this delicate drawing, where tiny figures and winding paths emphasize the sheer scale of the rocky landscape. Classical buildings perch precariously on the edge above, surrounded by sparse trees that cling to the rugged terrain. Sketches like this were popular souvenirs for travelers on the Grand Tour, allowing them to bring home memories of Italy's breathtaking beauty in a portable format. The warm, toned paper gives the scene a nostalgic, sun-baked feel.
