Saint Cloud

François Flameng

Saint Cloud by François Flameng, 1906

Though François Flameng was a staunch Academic painter known for grand historical scenes, this sketch shows his looser, more spontaneous side. He captures the Parc de Saint-Cloud with sweeping strokes of brown wash, making the massive trees look like billowing smoke against the pale sky. Tiny figures in period dress wander up the stone steps, dwarfed by the manicured, cone-shaped topiaries. The inscription at the bottom adds a personal touch, dedicating the work 'to my friends of Antwerp' in July 1906, likely a warm souvenir of a French summer afternoon.
