Not so bad
1899
Frank Arthur Nankivell, a star cartoonist for the famous humor magazine *Puck*, captures a hilarious clash of cultures in this 1899 scene. Two elegantly dressed women, complete with towering hats and fur collars, watch a brutal rugby or football scrimmage from the safety of the stands. One waves a yellow flag while the other holds roses, treating the pile of wrestling men in the mud as if it were a polite garden party. The title 'Not so bad' is pure irony, poking fun at how the rough-and-tumble violence of American sports was becoming acceptable entertainment for high society ladies.
