Exercising the mounts
1907
Frank Nankivell didn't hold back in this 1907 political roast, depicting the upcoming 1908 presidential rivals as literal heavyweights. William Howard Taft, labeled on his striped shirt, dominates the Republican elephant while William Jennings Bryan rides the Democratic donkey. The joke is in the details: a tag on Bryan’s back invites him to the 'Fat Men’s Club,' highlighting that both candidates were known for their substantial size. Nankivell, a star cartoonist for Puck magazine, used bold, colorful styles typical of the Art Nouveau era to make his satire pop.
