Portrait of a Young Man

Portrait of a Young Man by Frans Hals, 1646-1648

Frans Hals was the master of making his subjects look like they were caught mid-conversation, and this confident young man is no exception. Notice the incredibly loose, almost messy brushstrokes on that crisp white collar—up close, it looks like abstract smears of paint, but step back and it perfectly captures the texture of lace. This guy, with his tilted hat and direct gaze, looks like he's about to share a secret or challenge you to a drink, completely breaking the stiff, boring rules of traditional portraiture. Hals painted with such speed and energy that you can almost feel his hand moving across the canvas, capturing a fleeting moment of Dutch Golden Age swagger.
