Deer in the Forest II
1912
Franz Marc shattered the traditional forest scene into a kaleidoscope of jagged, vibrant shards in this 1912 masterpiece. Look closely at the bottom left, and you'll spot a peaceful yellow deer nestled among the explosive reds, blues, and greens. As a key figure in the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter, Marc believed animals possessed an innocence humans had lost, and he used fractured, Cubist-inspired shapes to show the hidden, spiritual energy pulsing through nature. Tragically, he died in World War I just a few years after creating this dynamic vision of a forest alive with motion.
