The Foxes
1913
Franz Marc shattered the traditional animal portrait into a kaleidoscope of jagged reds, oranges, and blues in this explosive 1913 masterpiece. As a leading figure of the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter, Marc believed animals possessed an innocence that humans had lost, often using color to convey deep spiritual emotions rather than just physical reality. Here, two foxes seem to dissolve right into their environment, their bodies fractured by the heavy influence of Cubism and Futurism. Tragically, Marc would die in the trenches of World War I just a few years later, making these vibrant, pulsing shards of life a poignant farewell to a world he desperately wanted to see harmonized.
