Franz Pforr

1810

Self-portrait by Franz Pforr, 1810

Franz Pforr wasn't just painting himself; he was making a rebellious statement. As a co-founder of the Nazarene movement, he and his friends rejected contemporary fashion, sporting long, dark hair and high collars to mimic medieval masters like Albrecht Dürer. This intense self-portrait, created around 1810, captures the soulful gaze of a young man who sought spiritual purity in art. Tragically, Pforr died of tuberculosis at just 24, leaving behind a legacy that deeply influenced the later Pre-Raphaelites.
