The Fagot Trees of the Quays and Boulevards
Frédéric Bouchot captures a breezy day in Paris with this witty caricature. A dapper gentleman in a top hat strolls arm-in-arm with a fashionable lady, whose massive red skirt is caught in a dramatic gust of wind, revealing her white petticoat. But the real stars of the show are the sad, spindly trees lining the path. The title, 'Les Arbres-fagots' (The Bundle Trees), pokes fun at the thin, stick-like saplings planted along Parisian boulevards, which looked more like tied-up bundles of wood than actual trees. Published by the famous Aubert & Cie, this print is a perfect example of 19th-century French social satire, mocking urban life and fashion.
