The Invading Surf
Frederick Judd Waugh, known as the 'painter of the sea,' brings the ocean's fury to life in this dramatic scene. Massive, churning waves crash against dark, jagged rocks, sending plumes of white foam into the air under a brooding sky. Waugh spent years on Monhegan Island, Maine, studying the water so intently that he could capture its exact movement and mood. He was so dedicated to realism that he would often paint during actual storms to feel the spray and hear the roar of the surf!
