Westminster Bridge

Westminster Bridge by Frederick Nash

Before the Thames Embankment tamed the river, the banks of London were a muddy, chaotic marketplace. Frederick Nash captures this lively scene where horses wade right into the water and barges crowd the shoreline. The original Westminster Bridge, visible in the distance with its many arches, was notoriously poorly constructed and sank slightly, requiring constant repairs before being replaced in the 1860s.
