Admiration by Fritz Zuber-Bühler

Swiss painter Fritz Zuber-Bühler studied in Paris under the same teacher as Renoir, but while his classmates invented Impressionism, he stuck to this polished, realistic style. Here, a young girl with rosy cheeks and wild curls sits in a gilded chair, utterly mesmerized by her reflection in an ornate gold hand mirror. Dressed in a white off-the-shoulder blouse and a vibrant red skirt, she looks like she's playing dress-up, perhaps trying on her mother's jewelry. The smooth finish and sentimental subject are classic Academic art, designed to make the viewer go 'aww'.
