Bijutsukai Pl.171
1901
Furuya Kōrin splits the visual world in two here: a riotous garden of red and white dianthus flowers dancing over blue waves on top, and a serene, midnight-black scene of plum blossoms and bamboo below. Created in 1901 for the art magazine Bijutsukai, it showcases the artist's mastery of the Rinpa style, which loved bold contrasts and decorative nature patterns. The upper half feels like a luxurious kimono fabric design, while the bottom half evokes a quiet winter night. It's a perfect example of how traditional Japanese aesthetics were being packaged and shared with the world at the turn of the 20th century.
