Bijutsukai Pl.24
1901
Imagine a textile design that decided to become a landscape—that's the vibe of this 1901 piece by Furuya Kōrin. Created for the influential art magazine *Bijutsukai*, it showcases the artist's mastery of the Rinpa style, which loves bold, natural forms and repeating patterns. Massive, brown, speckled waves frame a central stream filled with *seigaiha* (traditional blue wave fans) and floating lotus flowers. Instead of realistic depth, Kōrin gives us a flat, rhythmic dance of shapes and textures that feels almost modern in its graphic simplicity.
