Lake Nemi
1857
George Inness captured the dreamy atmosphere of the Romantic movement in this serene 1857 view of Italy's Lake Nemi. In the foreground, two women relax by the water's edge while a lone swimmer enjoys the cool lake, all framed by lush, autumnal trees. In the distance, a hilltop town perches dramatically against a vast, cloud-filled sky. Inness was known for infusing landscapes with a sense of spiritual harmony, and this early work shows his growing mastery of light and atmosphere before he moved toward his later, more abstract Tonalist style.
