Young Virgin Mary
ca. 1640
Georges de La Tour strips away all the usual heavenly fanfare to show us a remarkably human Virgin Mary. Bathed in a soft, mysterious glow against a pitch-black background, she clasps her hands in quiet prayer while clutching a vibrant red rose. This French Baroque master was famous for his candlelit scenes, and here he uses that dramatic lighting to make a divine figure feel like a humble, relatable teenager lost in thought. It's a masterclass in making the sacred feel incredibly intimate.
