Diana and Her Nymphs
C. 1653 - 1654
Before he became the master of sunlit domestic interiors, a young Vermeer painted this moody, shadow-drenched mythological scene. You can spot Diana, the goddess of the hunt, by the crescent moon on her forehead as a nymph gently washes her feet while a loyal dog watches nearby. This is actually one of Vermeer's earliest known paintings, showing he was heavily influenced by Italian Baroque styles and dramatic lighting before developing the famous 'Delft light' we associate with him today.
