Artemisia by Gerard van Honthorst, ca. 1635

In this dramatic Baroque scene, an elderly man in vibrant red robes carefully spoons ashes from a large golden urn into a goblet held by a sorrowful woman in a shimmering silver gown. This depicts the legendary grief of Artemisia II of Caria, who supposedly mixed the cremated remains of her husband, Mausolus, into her daily drink to keep him close forever. Van Honthorst, a Dutch master influenced by Caravaggio, uses a spotlight effect to make her satin dress glow, contrasting her pale sadness with the dark, concerned faces of the onlookers behind her. It’s a pretty intense way to show devotion—drinking your spouse is definitely not a modern relationship goal!
