The Violin Player
1626
Gerard van Honthorst, a Dutch master famous for his dramatic candlelit scenes, captures a moment of pure musical joy here. The subject beams with a playful smile, her flamboyant red and yellow feathered headdress almost as loud as the music she's about to play. Dressed in a loose, golden-yellow robe that slips casually off one shoulder, she embodies the theatrical flair of the Baroque period. Honthorst spent time in Italy and was heavily influenced by Caravaggio, which is clear in the way the light dramatically highlights her face and the rich, silky textures of her clothing against the deep, dark background.
