Colonel John Trumbull
1818
Gilbert Stuart, the man behind the famous unfinished George Washington portrait, captured his fellow artist and rival John Trumbull here in 1818. Trumbull, who actually served as a colonel in the Revolutionary War, is shown with a distinguished, rosy complexion and wrapped in a heavy, fur-collared coat that screams early American aristocracy. Stuart's loose, expressive brushwork gives the subject a lively, breathing quality, making him pop against the dark, moody background. It's a fascinating meeting of two giants of early American art, one painting the other!
