Gilbert Stuart

1810

Isabella Henderson Lenox (1789-1866) by Gilbert Stuart, 1810

Gilbert Stuart, the artist who put George Washington on the dollar bill, captured this young socialite in 1810 with his signature soft touch. She looks like she just stepped out of a Jane Austen novel, wearing the trendy high-waisted white muslin dress and pink shawl of the Regency era. Those tight ringlets on her forehead were the ultimate 'cool girl' hairstyle of the time. Stuart was famous for making his subjects look lively and approachable, avoiding the stiff, formal look of older portraits, and here he perfectly captures her youthful, rosy-cheeked charm.
