Maggior Generale Henry Dearborn by Gilbert Stuart, 1812

Gilbert Stuart, the artist famous for painting George Washington, captured Major-General Henry Dearborn right as the War of 1812 was kicking off. The general sports a dashing black uniform with heavy gold embroidery and a bright red sash, looking every bit the seasoned military leader with his rosy cheeks and powdered white hair. Working in the Neoclassical style, Stuart had a special talent for making his subjects look incredibly lifelike, almost like they're about to speak to you. This portrait shows how American artists were trying to give their new nation's heroes the same grand treatment as European royalty.
