Christ Blessing by Giovanni Bellini, circa 1500

Here stands a serene Christ, raising his hand in a gentle blessing while holding a tall staff, set against a sweeping Venetian landscape at dusk. Bellini, a master of the Italian Renaissance, was famous for his revolutionary use of oil paint to create glowing light and soft atmospheric effects. Notice the tiny rabbits hopping in the grass at the bottom left—they’re a subtle symbol of resurrection and new life. This peaceful, humanized portrayal of Christ was a hallmark of Bellini’s style, moving away from stiff, golden backgrounds to place holy figures right into the natural world.
