The Rug Merchant
Step into a sun-drenched courtyard where a vibrant textile negotiation is taking place. A man in a purple robe holds up a large, colorful rug for inspection by a customer draped in a striking blue burnous. Giulio Rosati, a celebrated Italian painter of the Orientalist style, fills the foreground with stacks of intricately patterned carpets, showcasing his love for detail. Although these scenes look like snapshots from a trip to Morocco or Egypt, Rosati actually painted most of them from his studio in Rome, using his imagination to satisfy the European craze for exotic 'Eastern' life.
