La Victoire ailée by Giuseppe Cades, circa 1778

Giuseppe Cades channeled the grandeur of ancient Rome in this dynamic study of Winged Victory, created around 1778 during the height of the Neoclassical movement. The goddess stands poised with massive, feathered wings and a helmet, her flowing robes clinging to reveal the muscular anatomy beneath—a classic trick artists used to show off their knowledge of the human form. The cool blue wash gives the figure an ethereal, almost sculptural glow, making her look ready to soar right off the page. It’s a fantastic example of how 18th-century artists looked backward to antiquity to find their artistic forward momentum.
