Standing Bear
Gottfried Mind, a Swiss artist affectionately nicknamed the 'Raphael of Cats,' actually had a soft spot for much larger, furrier subjects too. In this charming sketch, a brown bear stands upright on its hind legs, its thick, textured coat rendered with meticulous, stippled brushstrokes that make you almost want to reach out and touch it. The creature looks almost like a curious child peering over a fence, a gentle portrayal that contrasts sharply with the fearsome reputation of bears in the wild. Mind was known for his deep empathy for animals, often capturing their personalities with a warmth that helped define the Romantic era's fascination with nature.
