Night Banquet of Han Xizai - Painting Core 3 - Temporary Rest
Here, the host Han Xizai takes a breather on a massive black couch, washing his hands while surrounded by his entourage. A musician stands ready with a pipa, suggesting the party is far from over. Believe it or not, this masterpiece started as a spy mission! The Emperor of Southern Tang sent the artist to secretly document Han's lavish parties to see if he was plotting a rebellion. Today, this incredible 10th-century 'surveillance footage' is a national treasure housed in the Palace Museum in Beijing.
