Night Revels of Han Xizai (Song Dynasty Copy) on silk 28.7x335
This legendary handscroll is essentially ancient China's most glamorous spy report! Emperor Li Yu of Southern Tang suspected his minister Han Xizai of political ambitions, so he sent court painter Gu Hongzhong to crash Han's infamous night party and paint what he saw. The result? A stunning five-scene cinematic scroll showing musicians, dancers, scholars drinking, and guests flirting — all while Han Xizai looks conspicuously bored and detached, as if silently saying 'I'm just here for the vibes, your majesty.' The painting brilliantly captures over 40 figures in exquisite detail, from silk robes to musical instruments, making it one of China's greatest narrative masterpieces.
