Ecce Homo
Guido Reni, the 17th-century Italian master, gives us a surprisingly intimate take on a brutal moment in this 'Ecce Homo.' The chaotic crowd usually surrounding Jesus is absent, leaving a solitary figure gazing upward with a look of divine resignation rather than agony. Reni was famous for his 'sweet' style, making Christ look incredibly beautiful with porcelain skin, even while wearing a sharp crown of thorns and holding a mock scepter. Interestingly, Reni was a compulsive gambler who often painted frantically to pay off debts, yet his religious works exude a calm, heavenly peace that completely hides his chaotic personal life.
