Orpheus And eurydice

Guido Reni

1596-97

Orpheus And eurydice by Guido Reni, 1596-97

Guido Reni captures the heartbreaking final moments of a mythological power couple here. Orpheus, the legendary musician clutching his lyre, has made the fatal mistake of looking back at his wife Eurydice as they flee the Underworld. You can see the hellish flames already nipping at her heels, dragging her back into the shadows because he broke the one rule: don't look back. Painted when the artist was barely twenty, this early Baroque masterpiece already showcases the dramatic, swirling fabrics and emotional intensity that would make him famous.
