Cottage Garden
1905-1907
While Gustav Klimt is best known for his shimmering, gold-leaf portraits, he completely abandoned human subjects during his summer holidays in the Austrian countryside to focus entirely on nature. This vibrant explosion of orange poppies, towering white hollyhocks, and purple blooms completely fills the square canvas, deliberately omitting any horizon line or sky. It feels less like a traditional landscape and more like a lush, decorative tapestry woven from pure color. Klimt would often view these scenes through a square viewer he carried around, obsessively capturing the chaotic beauty of cottage gardens without a single human in sight.
