Mani by Gustav Klimt, c. 1916

Even the master of gold leaf had to practice his basics! These four quick sketches show Gustav Klimt studying the complex geometry of the human hand around 1916. Instead of his usual ornate, decorative style, here we see raw, loose lines capturing the tension and weight of clenched fists and resting fingers. It’s a rare glimpse into the artist's workshop, proving that even a Symbolist genius spent hours just figuring out how knuckles bend before creating his famous masterpieces.
