Portrait of a Woman
circa 1890-1891
Before Gustav Klimt became famous for his dazzling golden mosaics, he honed his skills with traditional academic drawing. This intimate portrait from around 1890 captures a young woman with a calm, direct gaze, her face softly illuminated by white chalk highlights against the warm brown paper. While her features are meticulously shaded, her dress and shoulders dissolve into loose, energetic sketch lines, showing the artist's confidence. It’s a beautiful example of his early realism, long before he launched the Vienna Secession movement.
