Jupiter and Semele
1894-95
Gustave Moreau’s 'Jupiter and Semele' is a dazzling, jewel-encrusted vision of Greek mythology gone wrong. In the center, the god Jupiter sits on an elaborate throne, radiating divine power, while the mortal Semele reaches out to him, her pale body contrasting with the dark, ornate surroundings. According to myth, Semele asked to see Jupiter’s true form, a request that instantly incinerated her with his divine lightning. Moreau, a leading Symbolist, captures this fatal moment not with realistic fire, but with an overwhelming explosion of decorative detail, flowers, and mystical figures, creating a scene that feels like a kaleidoscope of ancient legends.
