As sereias

As sereias by Gustave Moreau, 1882

Created in 1882 during the height of the Symbolist movement, this piece sees Gustave Moreau reimagining mythology not as a history lesson, but as a fever dream. Three Sirens stand on a craggy cliff, their long hair flowing down to merge with the seaweed and rocks, as if they are growing out of the earth itself. Dressed only in crowns of leaves, they gaze at a hazy sunset with an expression that is more melancholic than monstrous. Moreau loved painting 'femme fatales'—dangerous women of legend—and here he turns the man-eating Sirens into ethereal, haunting guardians of the sea.
