Birth of Christ by Hans Baldung, 1539

Hans Baldung Grien, a star pupil of Albrecht Dürer known for his sometimes eerie themes, surprises us here with a tender, if slightly intense, family portrait. The older man—likely Joseph—is completely absorbed in a book, sporting a magnificent, cloud-like white beard that takes up half the composition. Mary stands beside him with her signature flowing, fiery-red hair cascading down, her green dress inscribed with the Latin greeting 'Ave Maria Gracia Plena.' At the bottom, the baby Jesus looks a bit grumpy while being cuddled by two cherubs, a charming touch that brings the divine scene down to earth, while tiny shepherds peek in from the background.
