The Crucifixion of Christ
1512
Hans Baldung Grien turned the traditional crucifixion scene into a dramatic, almost eerie spectacle in 1512. Notice how Christ's body is incredibly pale, almost glowing like marble against the stormy, dark sky—a signature move of the German Renaissance artist. Below the crosses, the scene is crowded with emotional figures, including a woman in red and green clinging to the base of the cross, while a richly dressed man on a spotted horse looks on. Baldung was a student of Albrecht Dürer and known for his intense, sometimes unsettling imagery, and this piece perfectly captures that raw, emotional power.
