The Canon
c. 1526
Hans Holbein the Younger crafted this biting woodcut for his famous 'Dance of Death' series, a visual sermon reminding viewers that the grave awaits everyone. In the scene, a grinning skeleton sneaks up behind a wealthy Cathedral Canon, tapping him on the shoulder while the cleric clutches an hourglass—his time has officially run out. Despite the Canon's heavy, fur-lined robes signaling immense power and wealth, Death is impatient to lead him away, serving as a sharp critique of church corruption during the Reformation. Originally published in 1538, these prints were wildly popular because they turned the terrifying concept of mortality into a darkly humorous social equalizer.
