The Councillor by Hans Holbein The Younger, c. 1526

Hans Holbein the Younger didn't hold back in his famous 'Dance of Death' series, and this 1526 woodcut is a perfect example. Here, a corrupt councillor is caught ignoring a begging peasant on the right while a devil whispers temptations into his ear from behind. He's so distracted by power and greed that he completely misses the skeleton at his feet holding an hourglass—Death has come to collect! It’s a dark warning that fancy fur robes won't save you from the Grim Reaper.
