Hashiguchi Goyō

1918

화장 by Hashiguchi Goyō, 1918

Hashiguchi Goyō was absolutely obsessed with hair, and it shows in this stunning 1918 masterpiece where a woman’s glossy, elaborate updo takes center stage. She pauses mid-ritual, holding a small mirror in one hand and a red powder puff in the other, applying white makeup to her shoulder with a look of serene concentration. This piece is a shining example of the Shin-hanga (New Print) movement, which blended traditional Japanese woodblock techniques with modern, realistic lighting and Western influences. Goyō was often called the 'Utamaro of the Taisho era' for his beautiful depictions of women, and the intricate floral patterns on her kimono collar prove he earned that title.
