Mount Ibuki in snow
1920-1921
Hashiguchi Goyō captures a serene winter scene where heavy snow blankets the landscape, weighing down the branches of pine trees along a winding blue river. In the distance, the massive, snow-covered silhouette of Mount Ibuki looms under a sky filled with falling snowflakes. Created during the Shin-hanga (new prints) movement, this woodblock print revives traditional Japanese aesthetics while incorporating a modern, almost photographic attention to light and atmosphere. Goyō was a perfectionist who often struggled with the printing process, making his relatively small body of work highly prized by collectors today.
