Herbst
Goltzius turns the harvest season into a theatrical tableau, featuring a trio of characters that seem straight out of a Mannerist play. A woman sits front and center offering a basket of apples, while a grape-crowned youth—channeling the spirit of Bacchus—leans on a wine barrel and toasts a stern, ruff-wearing gentleman. In the background, a busy farm scene with cattle and workers fades into the distance, grounding the allegory in rural reality. As a master printmaker, Goltzius was famous for his incredible control of line, and this drawing showcases his virtuoso hatching technique, building volume and texture with nothing but brown ink.
