Paisaje con cascada
1597-1600
Hendrick Goltzius was basically the rockstar of Dutch printmaking, and this landscape shows off his signature 'swelling line' technique that makes the jagged rocks look like they're flowing like soft fabric. Created around 1600 during the Mannerist period, the scene is a dramatic fantasy world, crammed with a rustic water mill, a giant twisting tree, and cliffs that feel much more intense than real life. If you look closely at the bottom left, you can spot his 'HG' monogram hiding on a rock, essentially signing his name on a masterpiece of texture and movement.
