Heiliger Philippus

Heiliger Philippus by Hendrick Goltzius, c. 1578

Hendrick Goltzius was a master of the burin, and this engraving shows off his incredible skill with line and texture. The scene is split between a chaotic martyrdom on the left—where muscular men strain to tie a figure to a cross—and the stoic figure of Saint Philip on the right, holding his symbolic cross and book. The Latin text at the bottom reveals this is the story of Philip, the 'athlete of Christ,' who traveled to the frozen lands of Scythia before meeting his end. The twisting, exaggerated muscles of the figures are a hallmark of the Mannerist style, making the suffering look almost like a heroic ballet.
