Episode of the Deluge by Henri-Pierre Danloux, before 1802

Stranded on a tiny rock amidst a terrifying biblical flood, a desperate family looks to the heavens for salvation. The muscular father reaches his arm skyward in a dramatic plea, his vibrant red cloak billowing against the dark, stormy background, while the mother slumps lifelessly beside him. At their feet, a baby sleeps peacefully, completely oblivious to the apocalyptic drama unfolding around them. Danloux painted this emotional scene while living in exile in London during the French Revolution, blending the strict forms of Neoclassicism with a raw, Romantic intensity that would soon take the art world by storm.
